The inaugural Woodcutter’s Ball Women’s Professional Lumberjack Competition is joining the Great Lakes Bay Region’s summer 2014 festival schedule. The two-day festival is June 14-15 in Auburn, Michigan, at the Auburn City Park.
In bringing this event to the area, we celebrate both the area’s unparalleled lumbering heritage and the healthy lifestyles embodied in modern women’s action sports. The “Lumberjills” represent both of these aspects as well as any other group active today in sports and family entertainment.
The Woodcutter’s Ball features teams from Australia and the United States in a competition sanctioned by the Midwest Lumberjack Association. Individual and team champions were crowned in traditional events such as the underhanded chop and crosscut saw, and we will post full results later this week. For photos from the preliminary heats, see our photo gallery.
Proceeds will benefit local public charities, including the Bay Area Women’s Center and Shelterhouse of Midland and Gladwin Counties. Donation boxes for both will be in the ticket tent. They have provided lists of needs for their programs: BAWC Needs List 2014 and Shelterhouse Wish List.
Festival hours are 10:30 a.m. to midnight Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Gates will open at 10:30 a.m. both days, with preliminary heats running from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, finals 11 a.m. to about 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission to the fenced-in area for athletic events and the beer/entertainment tent is $5 for ages 12 and older, free for 11 and younger.
In addition to the athletic events, the Woodcutter’s Ball will feature children’s activities on the hour, food and a raffle.
The beer tent opens at 11 a.m. and runs until 11:30 p.m. Saturday, 8 p.m. Sunday. There also will be music both days.
